Preliminary geoarchaeological survey: the paleohydrology of the Pecora river at the Vetricella site

Sedimentological, Stratigraphical and Geomorphological analysis were performed in the surroundings of the Vetricella site, in particular along the sections opened during geoengineering works on the left banks of the Pecora river, few hundreds meters to the NW of the site (Fig. 1).

(Fig. 1) In light blue the location of the section, the red dot indicate the Vetricella site.

The fieldwork has been carried out in the summer-fall 2015 before the artificial cover of the sections following the end of the works.

4 main sections were studied and 3 main preliminary stratigraphic units were assessed, each one characterized by distinctive facies associations and architectural elements depicting different depositional environments and alluvial plain landscapes, following major changes of geomorphological conditions at the surroundings (Fig. 2). The preliminary chronology of the sediments is promising, indicating major changes and the presence of palaeochannels and palaeoswamps around the 8th-11th century interval.
